Was able to come in due to the upgrade at the hutt gym, the facilities were much newer than the ones at the hutt, and there was also shampoo etc dispensers available, wished they accepted card payments as well. Love how there's a cafe downstairs very convenient.
I had a great time here when I was a member! Great classes, great selection of machines. After reading up on the gym situation in Wellington I was a little worried about what would happen when I had to cancel, but it couldn't have been easier! I'd recommend being upfront if you think you might have to/want to cancel soon after joining (I was only in Wellington for a fixed time) and they'll get you the best membership for your situation.
I'd especially recommend the step class for a great studio workout and The Trip for the best/weirdest spin class ever.
They have the cheapest quadshot, ie, short black four shots, in Wellington. Even cheaper than McDonald's McCafe. One of my girlfriends told me their cafe can afford to sell good coffee at a cheap price because Les Mills charge a lot for gym membership. I agree with her - they do charge a lot - but they are one of the best if not the best. Customer Service is outstanding. I went to to this gym from 1996 to 2015. I stopped going in 2015 because I had health issues. I started going to a different gym last year - Cityfitness in Thorndon.
I recently decided to cancel my Les Mills membership early (including paying the early termination fee) as I do not think the membership fees justify the experience. The gym floors often resemble a bomb site with weights and equipment strewn everywhere. Essentially you are paying 4x what you would pay at any other gym for the luxury of a 3-person committee saying "Hi" and "Bye" to you at the reception. Also, be aware that, if you sign up for a 12 month contract, the only way that you can get out early if your circumstances change or (like me) you do not consider the price to be justified is by paying the early termination fee. This is not mentioned during your orientation (which is legally dubious at best). In my view, if you are confident about the quality of service that you are providing, you should not require minimum period contracts with early termination fees (there are very low acquisition costs for new members that need to be recouped). The price probably only makes sense if you are taking the classes. However, if you are just interested in lifting tin and using the treadmill, you are effectively cross-subsidising people who go to classes. If you are looking to start your fitness journey or just looking for a new gym, I would highly recommend a gym like City Fitness as a great alternative. It is far, far cheaper, the equipment is just as good (gravity doesn't vary too much between gyms, so 20kg at City Fitness is the same as 20kg at Les Mills) and they have more gyms around the country, so you can usually find a gym if you are in a different city or town.
Perfect gym! Great classes. I just wish they were open late till on weekends as with shift works when I finish work they are closed already at 7 on Sat and Sunday.
Nice clean gym but if any staff are seeing this you guys NEED TO FIX THE AC OR TURN THE FANS ON!!! It is so boiling in there (especially in the woman's gym and when it's busy) that it's really miserable
I'm really enjoying Les Mills Taranaki and wished I joined years ago. The facilities are excellent and all the staff and class instructors have been so friendly and helpful. The classes have been a highlight for me, there's a big range and I've seen results quickly from going to a few GRIT and Bodypump classes a week.
Really cannot warn you away from this place enough. I was misled in the conversation about joining with Soyam where I was told I would be able to cancel my membership, the only concern I raised, and was reassured that I was getting a great deal. I was also encouraged to skip over reading the terms and conditions of the contract being told that it was just the same terms as had been discussed. I was fooled by the fancy atmosphere into thinking this place is above board but it operates like any dodgy sales business. I'm now being told that I cannot cancel without paying out my remaining contract which is completely at odds with what I was told in the gym, but as it was an in person conversation they refuse to follow up. Stay away, go somewhere cheaper and more honest.
