Ignore the timings. We began our ascent at 7:15AM after visiting both Narasimha Swamy temple & Anjaneyar temple, which are just a stone's throw away from this place. Railings make the climb & descent easier. Enjoyed the view of the town from the top. Sadly, the fort itself is poorly maintained. Every pillar of the fort is scarred with grafitti. It has a temple & mosque atop - proof that faiths can share the same land & sky (something today's fundamentalist nutjobs refuse to grasp!)

Its calm uphill and peacefull. Nice experience to climb up the hill which has a vaishnava temple and a small pallivasal. A garrison used to store foods/arms is also found. Once you up the hill, you can see the Narasimha temple and Anjaneya temple in strainght line, which is a goosepump for me. This hill may be a result of a volconic explosion and lava migh have converted into rock after millions of years. The narasimha and ranganathan both carved on the hill itself. They are not statutes as like in other temples. If you want to come around of Narasimhar or Ranganathar, you have to come around the hill as a whole (hope you understand) and who and why choose this stone hill to carve the vishnu avatar is a matter of importance and hence this hill is understood to be divine or having cosmic power. As it is a lava from volcano explosion Namakkal is pretty hot compared to other town in Tamil Nadu.

Located in the centre of the town, limited number of paid parking available next to the farmers market for 30. From the parking you have to walk around the market for about 1/2 KM to reach the steps leading to the fort. It's about 150 steps and easy to claim. On the top you get a good view of the Namakkal town and nothing much to do in side the fort except a temple and a mask. You can click few pics and go around the perimeter of the fort. There are lot of scribbling on the wall and rocks by visitors which make it ugly, hope people behave more mature and responsible? I wish TTDC takes steps to maintain the place well?

Hill Fort, Namakkal. though it has different version of history crediting different Naik clan for building it, let us go with what ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) India has inscribed at the foot hill of fort. This fort is build on summit of rounded mass of white gneiss with entrance / narrow stairs hewn on the rock on the south-west side and it also has a secrete gate from North. Ramachandra Naik, a paligar of Sendamangalam and by other officers under the Mysore Raja / kingdom. The steps are a bit steep and short, looks like a crazy trek of business to climb up but it was easy. people are allowed to enter till 5:30. A small temple, a big hall (ruined), small lake, are on the top of the mountain or inside fort. it has two big lakes also which can be seen from top. one on the South (probably) has boating facility. can be visited within 30 to 40 minutes easily. This fort might have used as watch tower, water storing or weapon storing strategic location.
